Hottest freelance skills: React.js secures Top 5 spot, AngularJS ousted from Top 10 list

When two indexes say the same thing, maybe it’s time to believe them. Earlier this year, Stack Overflow put together some data on hiring trends and found that both React.js and Docker are in great demand.

They discovered that the most in-demand technologies right now are:

  • ReactsJS
  • Docker
  • Ansible
  • Apache Spark
  • SysAdmin

In short, Stack Overflow’s Developer Hiring Trends says that knowing how to use ReactJS, Docker, Ansible and Apache Spark will help you find a job faster.

Now if we look at Upwork’s latest Skills Index, React.js may not be No.1 but it’s important enough to be included in the top 5 fastest-growing skills (Q3 2017) in the US.

They discovered that the top five fastest-growing skills are:

  • Robotics
  • Blockchain
  • Bitcoin
  • Penetration testing
  • React.js

The Upwork Skills Index ranks the 20 fastest-growing skills in the U.S. freelance job market.

Robotics is the fastest-growing skill of the quarter. According to the key takeaways, “the uptick in demand comes at a time when major companies such as Amazon ($AMZN) and Toyota Research Institute ($TM) are pursuing initiatives around robotics, and IDC predicts that worldwide spending on robotics and related services will more than double by 2020, growing from $91.5 billion in 2016 to more than $188 billion.”

Blockchain and Bitcoin are also newcomers and they managed to secure top 5 spots. It’s no wonder though, especially since Gartner included Blockchain in their 2017 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies.

I think we’re just on the edge of blockchain’s potential. There is no shortage of big visions for this technology as part of a new Internet technology stack that, if done right, it can have tremendous positive impact for the tech industry and society in general. Hyperledger’s role is to enable whatever happens up that stack by building a great, trustworthy, modular, Apache-licensed and transparently built foundation for the base of that stack. We are the plumbers and if we’re successful everyone gets to move on up the stack to more interesting, profitable, powerful applications. By developing a common distributed ledger technology that is shared, transparent and decentralized, the possibilities are endless.

Brian Behlendorf, Executive Director of Hyperledger

Deciding which JavaScript framework is best for your web application is never easy and even though the “war” between React and Angular is a bit far-fetched since one is a framework and the other is a library, it seems that the best skill (between the two) freelancers should have right now is React.js.

Angular and React are solving the same problems with different approaches. One thing you should really take into consideration is your team: Does it have years of experience in JavaScript? Then React is probably the best choice.

Teams with a strong Java background usually feel more comfortable using Angular. TypeScript is one of the reasons for that, as it has many of the structural characteristics that Java developers are missing with JavaScript. JavaScript experts are sometimes put off by that because their freedom is quenched by TypeScript’s strong type system.

Keep in mind that the findings represent the reality in the U.S. freelance job market so if you’re living elsewhere, chances are that the top 20 list contains other skills.
