A Brief Insight Into Managing UX Projects

UX is the art of drawing the most efficient user experience — the goal is that the user’s experience is unparalleled, no matter whether it is an app, website, or even a non-technical platform. It is a critical and creative evaluation of the problem so as to propose a solution. It’s an attempt to carefully craft a superb experience for an end-user.

Unlike the UX exercise for a web application or mobile app, it becomes extremely challenging when the project that you have undertaken is just UX without a tangible prototype for the customer.

  1. Like in the case of any other project, an in-person meeting with the complete team of stakeholders is inevitable so as to very precisely define the objective of the UX exercise to be undertaken.
  2. Arrange for stakeholder interviews to get a deeper insight into the business requirements and improve your clarity of thought.
  3. Conduct workshops with the customer to refine the requirement, which will not only help to better understand the project, but also build a better rapport with the stakeholder team.
  4. Get a clear understanding of the timeline as well as the deliverables — the timeline can vary from a couple of months to a year or more and the deliverables can vary from simple user journeys to storyboards, infographic posters, etc.
  5. Ensure that you ask your questions early in the course of the project because it might take time to consult with all of the stakeholders and get clarification.
  6. Understand the constraints in the project with respect to time, cost, delivery deadlines, resource availability, information availability, and technological constraints — the output of a UX project is very subjective.
  7. Research solutions proposed for a similar kind of problem.
  8. As a first step to confirm your understanding, ensure that you share a ‘Design Brief’ document with the stakeholders. A design brief document will have the business goals, target users, marketing goals, critical success factors, etc. associated with the project undertaken mentioned as clearly as possible.
  9. At each stage, maintain frequent and regular interactions with the stakeholders, as well as anyone else concerned, so as to ensure correct progress.
  10. A UX solution is never purely hypothetical. The solution proposed is based on a thorough understanding of the requirements, quantitative analysis of user data, user research, and conclusions that the UX designers arrive at based on all the studies that they undertake. However, it’s still subjective.
  11. Plan to have multiple review sessions, ideally scope either equal or more time than the time estimated for other activities throughout the course of the project considering the nature of deliverables.
  12. The final presentation should be as simple and self-explanatory as possible so that anyone who reviews can relate to it and understand the benefit of the solutions proposed for the existing pain points.
  13. It is advisable to have a dedicated team who understands the whole process of working on the UX design project, as it helps a lot during the brainstorming sessions.
  14. Based on the nature of the business requirement and the stakeholder team, decide what your deliverable is going to be as in UX, you do have different ways of portraying your proposed solutions.
